Answer of Cambridge Book 8 Test 3 Academic Writing Task 2

It is argued that increasing petrol prices is the most effective solution to traffic jams and contamination problems. I strongly agree with this statement because this would likely increase the use of public transport. This could also be addressed by enhancing public transport services and encouraging people to share their private vehicles with others.

If the gas price went up, people would opt for public buses and the metro more often. This is because owning a private car is already costly, and a hike in fuel prices will further add to the running costs, thereby discouraging people from using their vehicles and encouraging public transport usage instead. Consequently, due to this shift, there would be less congestion on roads and improved air quality. For example, in India, gasoline costs have risen significantly over the years; therefore, most Indians commute via public transport.

Another feasible step is to improve the quality of public transportation services. This is because, at present, public buses or trains cannot meet the high demand of users. However, if the governments were to improve these services, more people would prefer using them, resulting in fewer traffic jams and reduced toxic emissions in the environment. Moreover, carpooling schemes could alleviate both problems. To explain, sharing a vehicle with others would bring down the number of private cars on the road, which would also lead to lower pollution levels. Uber, for instance, is an app that allows private vehicle owners to share their travel routes with others for a small fare, resulting in less traffic congestion and carbon emissions.

To conclude, I totally agree that raising the cost of gasoline is the optimal way to address bottlenecks and airborne contamination because it would encourage people to use public buses and trains. Improving public transport services and promoting shared transportation schemes could also tackle these issues.
