Answer of Cambridge Book 5 Test 2 Academic Writing Task 2  

Instead of entering college life immediately after completing secondary schooling, some motivate youngsters to take a year off to either travel or work. The main benefits of doing this are that young people can gain worldly experience and save money, but delayed careers and reduced motivation to study are the primary concerns.

The main advantage of taking a gap year is that teenagers can gain a broader understanding of the world. This is because the real world is entirely different from their educational world, and doing this can allow them to learn how to survive outside their bubble. Additionally, they can earn money for their studies. If they do full-time work for a year, they will not have to worry about their finances while studying, and instead of doing part-time jobs to cover their tuition fees, they can concentrate on their studies and make a bright future. For example, after completing high school, many American high schoolers go into the workforce, like they wait tables or do other unskilled jobs, to earn money for their further studies.

The primary drawback of this phenomenon is that it wastes a precious year of students’ careers. If a student did not drop out that one year, they could have completed their studies a year earlier, and those who did not drop out would get a head start in their careers. Another problem is that such students may never return to their studies. Once they get accustomed to the life of travel or work, most of them do not return to student life, and they have to do below-par jobs, as high-paid jobs require a certain qualification. In India, for instance, children of daily wagers do not usually enter college as they start working after secondary school to help their parents financially.

In conclusion, although the principal benefits of taking a break from studies are that teens can gain real-life experience and save up money, the major concerns associated with it are delays in their careers and disillusionment with education.
