Question: In many countries around the world, rural people are moving to cities, so the population in the countryside is decreasing. Do you think this is a positive or a negative development?

Answer of Cambridge Book 18 Test 3 Academic Writing Task 2
In many parts of the world, the countryside population is declining since it is migrating to urban areas. I strongly believe this to be a negative development because farming practices are decreasing, and the stress on cities’ resources is increasing.
The main reason this shift of villagers to cities should be seen as disastrous is because this reduces agricultural production. With fewer people living in rural areas, fewer individuals engage in agriculture, making it challenging to maintain agricultural productivity. This results in reduced crop yields and decreased food security, and such countries have to depend on imports, meaning crop prices often soar through the roof, making it difficult for common people to fulfil their daily nutritional needs. For instance, in many parts of Africa, the migration of young people to cities has resulted in a significant decline in agricultural productivity, leading to food insecurity and increased reliance on imports.
Another reason to consider is the strain on the cities’ resources caused by the rapid influx of people. As the resources are limited in every city or place in the world, so when large numbers of people move to cities, it puts pressure on urban infrastructure and services. As a result, people face issues like housing shortages and transportation congestion, making life for city dwellers challenging and dropping their living standards considerably. In India, for example, the rapid growth of cities like Mumbai and Delhi has led to severe pressure on housing, sanitation, and transportation systems, resulting in increased poverty, inequality, and environmental degradation.
In conclusion, this essay firmly believes that the decline in countryside populations due to rural-to-urban migration is a negative development because it leads to declining farmers and overwhelming cities’ infrastructures.
