Answer of Cambridge Book 18 Test 2 Academic Writing Task 2
A few graduates studying in third-level education wish to study additional subjects alongside their core ones, while others believe that focusing solely on their degree is more crucial. Although some say studying for a qualification can enhance career opportunities, I believe that learning extra subjects can be more beneficial as it broadens pupils’ horizons.
On the one hand, certain individuals consider that graduates should have a laser-sharp focus on their main subjects to increase their job prospects. By dedicating themselves to their qualification, college students can gain in-depth knowledge of their core subjects that can help to build a deeper understanding of their fields, and they usually score more than those who are complacent about their studies. Since companies always seek committed candidates, they have better chances of securing employment. For example, hospitals prefer medical students with high exam scores, as they are seen as more knowledgeable. However, I believe that these jobs are limited in number, and focusing solely on them could leave many in distress.
On the other hand, others often claim that studying supplementary subjects is more advantageous as it can widen one’s horizon. That is to say that when students in tertiary education look out for knowledge beyond their traditional subjects, they may gain insights that can change the course of their lives and provide a purpose that their degree alone might not offer. Many successful entrepreneurs, for instance, said they could reach such great heights because they studied optional subjects along with their compulsory subjects in college, contributing to their holistic development. Therefore, I consider that students should be allowed to study extra subjects to explore career options and become self-reliant.
In conclusion, even though some would argue that focusing exclusively on an academic qualification can improve chances of getting a job, I believe that exploring additional subjects is more advantageous as it broadens one’s perspective.
