Answer of Cambridge Book 18 Test 1 Academic Writing Task 2

It is argued that striving to make people’s lives better should be the primary objective of science. I completely agree with this statement because taxpayers’ money funds scientific research, and humanity relies on science for survival.

The main reason why I agree that science should focus on benefiting individuals is that a significant portion of the national budget is allocated to research and development projects. That is to say that these projects require substantial funding due to the high costs of equipment and materials, and they often take years to yield results. Since governments provide this funding from public revenue, it is an ethical responsibility for scientists to use their knowledge to benefit society. The Indian Government, for example, allocates billions of dollars yearly to science to develop new techniques and medicines to improve public health.

Another reason to consider is the people’s reliance on science to survive. This is because the human population has increased exponentially over the last century, which has given rise to new problems like climate change and shortage of food. Thus, scientific advancements have become crucial in addressing such problems, as failure to do so could have catastrophic consequences, potentially threatening human existence. For instance, fatal diseases such as tuberculosis, diabetes and cholera are now curable, and scientists are trying to develop sustainable renewable energy sources like wind and solar to mitigate global warming and ensure a livable planet.

In conclusion, I completely agree that science has a moral obligation to improve people’s lives because taxpayers’ money covers the cost of experiments, and our existence depends on scientific breakthroughs.
