Answer of Cambridge Book 17 Test 2 Academic Writing Task 2  

Some juveniles spend significant time daily on their iPhones or Android phones. The main reason behind this is the availability of various entertainment options, but I consider this to have negative consequences as smartphones might hinder children’s ability to solve problems independently.

The primary cause minors enjoy spending hours on their mobile devices is that many platforms are readily available for them to use. To explain, with internet connectivity, children can access various platforms, including OTT services and gaming apps. This provides them with endless entertainment options, allowing them to spend the entire day consuming new content without much thought. If they get bored with one video or app, they can seamlessly switch to any other show or app that offers different content. For example, streaming serviceslike Netflix and games such as PUBG entice children to spend their free time in front of a screen by giving them different genres of movies, web series and gaming modes.

However, I believe this development for young boys and girls has negative consequences because it may stifle their problem-solving abilities. Smartphones often present pre-programmed activities and readily available solutions, hindering the development of independent thinking, a crucial adult skill. This reliance on pre-programmed solutions can leave young people feeling helpless when faced with real-world challenges that require innovative approaches. For example, popular puzzle games offer hints or automatically solve sections if a child gets stuck, and this eliminates the opportunity for the child to persevere and solve the puzzle on their own by using different techniques and tactics that can help to develop their brains.

In conclusion, the allure of videos and games on mobiles is irresistible to many under 18, leading them to spend hours on their smartphones daily. Nevertheless, this essay thinks this is not a welcome development because mobile phones hamper the development of decision-making skills in young people.
