Answer of Cambridge Book 16 Test 3 Academic Writing Task 2ย ย
A large number of processed food and drink products contain a high amount of sugar, leading to numerous health issues. To discourage excessive sugar consumption, it is suggested that these products ought to be costlier. I completely agree with this idea, as it would encourage healthier eating habits and reduce the burden on healthcare services.
The main reason I agree that prices of products containing a lot of sugar should be raised is that people will choose healthier eating options. That is to say, consumers tend to buy food at lower prices to save money, and due to being produced in large quantities, sugary products tend to be less expensive than organic produce. However, if calorie-dense products had exorbitant pricing, people would buy them less often and may switch to other healthy options, like fruits and vegetables. For example, in many restaurants, fizzy drinks cost more than drinking water; therefore, many customers prefer drinking water instead of sodas.
Another reason to raise the price of sugar-laden foods is that it can alleviate pressure on hospitals. Excessive sugar intake leads to preventable illnesses such as obesity, Type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease, which often overwhelms medical facilities. By imposing higher levies, governments can discourage the consumption of such products, making them less accessible to the general public and promoting healthier dietary habits. Since healthier people tend to require less medical attention, medical care can be given to patients with critical or unavoidable conditions. For instance, the UKโs sugar tax has effectively mitigated obesity-related ailments, reducing the strain on the NHS.
In conclusion, I strongly agree that processed sugary products should be priced higher to discourage people from consuming them because high prices might nudge people to make healthier food choices and may put less stress on the healthcare sector.
