Answer of Cambridge Book 14 Test 2 Academic Writing Task 2
Some argue that biodiversity loss is the most pressing environmental issue nowadays, while others believe there are more significant environmental problems. Although air pollution significantly impacts the environment, I consider the loss of animal and plant species to be more detrimental because it disrupts the food chain.
On the one hand, some think that air pollution is a primary environmental concern at present. This is because the increased number of factories and transportation methods burn large amounts of fossil fuels, creating more pollution than before. This air contamination is worrisome because it can reduce atmospheric oxygen, which is essential for breathing, and cause lung diseases in humans. For example, in the past few years, due to more toxic fumes from vehicles and factories in the environment, an increased number of lung cancer cases have come to light. However, this essay believes that with the emergence of renewable energy sources, the dependence on fossil fuels is decreasing constantly, making this issue less alarming.
On the other hand, others say that the extinction of specific species of flora and fauna is a more critical issue because this negatively affects the food chain. All living creatures depend on plants and other animals to survive, so the extinction of even one species can unbalance the food chain, leading to other species dying due to food shortages, and it will cause ecological catastrophes. For example, bees are crucial for pollination, and their extinction would result in decreased crop yields and widespread hunger that can wipe humans off the face of the earth. Since the survival of humans also depends on the ecosystem, I would argue that the loss of biodiversity is the primary issue we are facing now.
In conclusion, even though some believe air pollution is an urgent environmental concern, I think that the effect of the extinction of particular species of plants and animals is more critical due to its adverse impacts on the food chain.
