Answer of Cambridge Book 12 Test 2 Academic Writing Task 2
In some nations, the population is predominantly composed of young people compared to older adults these days. Although governments can have adequate resources to care for older people due to this demographic trend, I think this situation’s disadvantages far outnumber the advantages because this is the main reason for overpopulation.
Having a higher number of young adults is advantageous for nations as they could contribute enough resources to the governments, which can be used to support older adults. This is because young people are active in the workforce and pay taxes, which governments can then allocate for the welfare of the elderly. The Japanese Government, for example, struggles to provide care for its older population due to fewer young adults. However, I argue that the exponential growth of the population that young people cause could eliminate this potential benefit, as governments may need to divert funds to address unemployment benefits.
However, the primary disadvantage of this situation is the risk of overpopulation. That is to say that the propensity to procreate is much higher among young couples, leading to population growth in an already densely populated world. This could result in a scarcity of resources, making it difficult for populations to meet their daily needs. For instance, due to its significant number of young people, the Indian population is increasing at an alarming rate, and the government is struggling to provide basic necessities. Since this situation can lead to increased starvation and homelessness, this essay believes that having more young adults has more downsides.
In conclusion, even though more young people can provide ample resources to care for the elderly, they would exacerbate the overpopulation crisis. For these reasons, I assert that the negatives far outweigh the positives.
