Answer of Cambridge Book 11 Test 3 Academic Writing Task 2ย ย
Some individuals believe that the sole purpose of studying a foreign language is to travel or work abroad, while others would argue that these are not the only reasons to learn a foreign language. Although learning a foreign language can make communication easier while travelling or working, I believe that acquiring a second language is crucial to improving cognitive abilities.
On the one hand, some people believe that travelling or working is the only reason why someone should learn a second language as it can improve communication. If someone knows a foreign language, it helps avoid any misunderstandings that might occur because of the language barrier while working or travelling in that country. For example, governments often appoint delegates fluent in the local language of the country they are assigned to so they can communicate without any trouble. However, I believe that for work and travel, hiring a translator can be a more practical solution than going through the trouble of learning a new language.
On the other hand, others would argue that learning a foreign language is beneficial for enhancing peopleโs cognitive skills. To explain, learning a second language usually engages various parts of the brain, such as memory, concentration, and critical thinking, and when these parts are actively used, they develop further, improving a personโs intellect. For instance, many detectives who speak more than one language have better concentration and are more adept at multitasking and problem-solving than their monolingual counterparts. Since learning a second language can open doors to new possibilities, I consider that people should learn it for their personal growth rather than for work or travel.
In conclusion, even though learning a foreign language is beneficial for clear communication when travelling or working abroad, I believe people should learn a second language to improve their intellectual capabilities instead.
