Answer of Cambridge Book 11 Test 1 Academic Writing Task 2

It is argued that countries ought to invest more money in building railway networks instead of roads. I completely agree with this statement because trains are environmentally friendly and safer.

One main reason why I am in favour of prioritizing railways over roads is due to their environmental benefits. That is to say that trains carry more passengers than cars; therefore, trains create less pollution per traveller. This helps to reduce the carbon footprints of individuals and decreases the harmful gases that would otherwise have been released into the atmosphere, making railways a more sustainable investment. The Chinese government, for example, has invested heavily in its railway system, and this has resulted in a noticeable reduction in smog in the air.

Another reason to invest in railways is that travelling by train is safer than by road. This is because trains run on dedicated tracks with one train per track at a time, and train drivers are typically well-trained professionals with years of experience who follow strict safety protocols. In contrast, road users may vary widely in their experience and adherence to safety rules, making them less safe for people. Hence, investing in railway infrastructure can reduce the number of deaths caused by accidents. For instance, fewer train accidents and fatalities are reported every year than road accidents globally.

In conclusion, this essay completely agrees that governments should allocate more funds to rail networks than road infrastructure because railways are less harmful to the environment and provide a safer means of transport.
