Answer of Cambridge Book 10 Test 4 Academic Writing Task 2

Several museums charge an entry fee, while others do not. Although the drawback of charging fees is that some people are left out, I think the advantages outweigh the disadvantages because this funding helps many museums stay open.

The main disadvantage of charging entry to museums is that such fees can exclude some parts of the population. Many working people earn just enough money for basic necessities like food and shelter, making it impossible to pay for luxury items like exhibits and museums. This deprives them of the opportunity to appreciate their history and culture. For example, many famous museums in India charge people for admission, which is why most daily-wage workers have never even visited them once in their lives. However, this essay would argue that museums may not survive without this income.

One benefit of entry fees is that they allow many museums to remain operational. That is to say that not all museums receive government funding and even those that do often do not get sufficient amounts to cover their entire operating costs. Therefore, ticket sales enable them to continue running, allowing at least some individuals to have the privilege to see the exhibits rather than no one. In the UK, for instance, due to significant government spending cuts, several museums depend entirely on entrance fees to pay their staff, enabling citizens to see their glorious past. Since watching their heritage gives people a sense of pride that cannot be bought, I believe the advantages of charging money are more considerable.

In conclusion, even though it is unfortunate that not everyone can enjoy museum exhibits if an entry fee is charged, the revenue from admission is often the only thing keeping museums open. For these reasons, this essay believes that the pros clearly outweigh the cons.
