Answer of Cambridge Book 10 Test 3 Academic Writing Task 2
Countries are becoming increasingly alike as people can purchase the same goods anywhere in the world. In my opinion, this is a negative development because it not only leads to cultural homogeneity but also diminishes the value of traditional items.
The main reason that it is not beneficial for countries if they become more like each other is because this will result in the loss of cultural identity. That is to say that each country’s culture has its unique characteristics, but as nations become more similar, it reduces the appeal for foreigners to travel and discover what makes each country unique. Consequently, it may cause a significant decrease in a country’s gross domestic income, thereby affecting its economy. For example, many Englishmen prefer their vacations in Asian countries rather than their neighbourhood European countries due to similar ethnicities and cultures, negatively impacting these economies.
Another reason why this is a negative occurrence is the decline in the cost of traditional goods. This is because, without product diversity, almost every business worldwide will be selling the same items, which increases competition, making it difficult for people to earn a living. This may force some sellers to lower the selling price of unique, local products. For instance, the Saree, Indian women’s traditional clothing, was once considered a costly item by foreigners because it was only available in India. However, now it can be purchased globally, significantly reducing its cost.
In conclusion, I believe the increasing similarity of countries is an unwelcome development because many cultures will become extinct and it will lead to the loss of cultural commodities.
