Answer of Cambridge Book 5 Test 3 Academic Writing Task 2ย ย

It is argued that children should be motivated to be competitive, while others feel that teaching them to be cooperative will be more beneficial in their adulthood. Although some say competition can help children be successful, I believe that cooperation is more important because it teaches them teamwork, a crucial adult skill.

On the one hand, instilling a sense of competition in children helps them to accomplish their goals. This is because they are in direct competition with their peers and others in school or their jobs when they grow up, and if they want to get what they aspire to, they will have to outwork and outperform their competitors. If they learn the importance of hard work and discipline, they will never shy away from competition, increasing their chances of success. For example, many entrepreneurs have stated that due to the competitive attitude instilled in them in their childhood, they never gave up even when the odds were stacked heavily against them, and they eventually became successful. However, I would argue that working alone can only take someone so far.

On the other hand, others argue that teaching children to be cooperative can help them understand how to work in a team. If they work in a team from an early age, they will learn how to work with different personalities, handle differences or conflicts, and pool their strengths to achieve a common objective. If they learn this skill, they can reduce their burden and increase their chances of becoming successful, as they may be lacking in some aspect in which someone else might be a master or vice versa. CEOs of many multinational, billion-dollar companies, for instance, are selected based on their peopleโ€™s skills rather than their intelligence or higher IQ level. Since collaboration can help children become good team players and leaders, I believe teaching them to work with others is more useful when they become adults.

In conclusion, even though some individuals consider that instilling a sense of competition in children can help them succeed, I think teaching children to be cooperative is far more valuable even later in life as it teaches them to work as a team.
