Question: Plastic bags, plastic bottles and plastic packaging are bad for the environment. What damage does plastic do to the environment? What can be done by governments and individuals to solve this problem?

Answer to IELTS Cambridge Book 16 Test 1 General Writing Task 2

Plastic products such as bags, bottles, and packaging are harmful to the environment. The prominent harm that plastic causes is polluting the oceans, and to address this issue, governments should enforce stringent recycling rules, and individuals should minimise their plastic usage.

The significant damage that plastic causes is ocean pollution. Companies often do not dispose of their plastic waste properly as it increases their expenditure, so instead, they dump it into the ocean. This improper disposal of plastic waste has put some marine life in danger of extinction and has severely damaged the ecosystem because plastic is non-biodegradable and does not dissolve in water, forming blocks of rubbish in oceans. For instance, due to governments’ poor management and weak policies on plastic waste disposal, billions of tons of used bottles and packaging have been dumped in the Pacific, creating the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

Governments can tackle the issue by implementing strict legislation on recycling. Introducing such regulations and fines would incentivise people and organisations to recycle plastic as they will try to avoid heavy penalties, and plastic would not end up in waterways, preventing the environment from being damaged. Another obvious solution is for people to cut down on plastic use. If households’ consumption of single-use plastic reduces, it will automatically decrease the demand for these products, thus saving the environment, and it may reverse the unprecedented harm that has been done. For example, in Sweden, many people have stopped using plastic bags and instead use paper bags, which has significantly reduced plastic bag production.

In conclusion, the main concern with using products made of plastic, such as bags, bottles, and packaging, is that they are major pollutants of oceans. To combat this, governments should enact strict recycling laws, and individuals should aim to limit the use of plastic items in their daily lives.
