Answer to IELTS Cambridge Book 16 Test 2 General Writing Task 2
While some individuals enjoy having new experiences, such as visiting different places and eating various cuisines, others choose to stick to things that they are used to. Although some individuals do familiar activities because they fear unpleasant experiences, this essay believes exploring novel things helps people discover more about themselves.
On the one hand, some people are reluctant to experience things which are new to them because they want to avoid the risk of discomfort. In other words, individuals prefer not to feel uneasy when they go somewhere new and do not want to be repelled if they eat new types of food, so instead of stepping into the unknown territory, such beings prefer to do what they know. For example, many foreign tourists visiting South Asian countries avoid spicy food because they worry it might burn their mouths or upset their stomachs. However, I believe that people who confine themselves to things they are comfortable with will miss out on opportunities they might have enjoyed if they were open to trying something new.
On the other hand, other group of people embrace new experiences so that they can learn about themselves. This is because these people understand they will only know what they like or dislike about particular experiences once they allow themselves to explore new things. Therefore, rather than playing it safe, they prefer to keep themselves open to all the opportunities they may encounter in their lifetime. For example, these days, western people can enjoy many more Indian restaurants because the younger generation seeks different dining experiences. Since exposing themselves to new opportunities may facilitate people to find something that can change the course of their lives, I am of the opinion that this view is superior.
In conclusion, even though sticking to an already-formed opinion might ensure one’s life is at ease, I believe people should try new things to find out about their likes and dislikes.
