Answer to IELTS Cambridge Book 14 Test 2 General Writing Task 2
Some say that befriending someone with the same outlook towards life is preferable, while others think it is beneficial to make friends who may oppose them at times. Although friends who always share the same views have less conflict, I believe that people who have friends with different opinions may learn something new.
On the one hand, the benefit of being friends with someone with the same views is that it minimises arguments. This is because understanding each other’s opinions and beliefs will lead to harmonious interactions and a strong bond, as there would be fewer disputes and arguments when discussing topics or planning activities together. For example, friends who support the same political party or share a hobby do not need to debate or argue and can enjoy a deeper connection and have a more enjoyable social experience. However, I would argue that always agreeing with each other makes friendship dull, as they will not learn anything new.
On the other hand, others think that friends with different beliefs help people grow. Having friends who occasionally disagree leads to in-depth discussions that stimulate critical thinking, helping them broaden their understanding of different perspectives and learn something they did not know previously. As a result, they can make themselves better and achieve their goals by avoiding the mistakes they made in the past. For instance, if a person often procrastinates, their friend can sit them down and help them understand the consequences of their delayed actions, and as a result, they can become successful by giving up this habit of theirs. Therefore, I opine that friends who oppose you if you are on the wrong path are true friends.
In conclusion, while having like-minded friends might lead to fewer clashes, I believe disagreement on some issues can make people grow more, which is more desirable.
