Answer to IELTS Cambridge Book 16 Test 4 General Writing Task 2

Several people argue that the present era is the greatest moment for humans to exist. I completely agree with this statement because of technological advancements in every field. Another interesting time to live through would have been the Renaissance.

The reason why I believe now to be the most optimal time for humans is due to the advancements in technology. No doubt the modern way of life has its challenges, but the progress that we have made, in terms of new machinery and gadgets for transportation or medical care, has made our lives drastically easier and increased our lifespan. Also, things once considered impossible or fatal have become trivial or not so significantly challenging, thus making our lives a bed of roses. For example, due to the accessibility of aeroplanes, people can now go to any part of the world and have a completely new experience compared to the place they live in, which was not practically possible before.

Apart from now, the other period that could have been fascinating to experience is the Renaissance period. The Renaissance was the time of exploration and discovery because people began questioning traditional authority and sought knowledge through observation. As a result, people transitioned from the medieval to the modern world, so modern art and science came into existence, and experiencing something happening for the first time in history is always interesting. Famous personalities such as Leonardo da Vinci and Galileo, for instance, revolutionised art and challenged people’s perception of the universe, and individuals witnessed many new ground-breaking discoveries that were unimaginable, making it an exciting period.

In conclusion, I agree that the present represents the best time to be alive because of advancements in technology, and if I were to choose another time in history that would be fascinating to live in, it might be the period between the 14th and 17th century because of the revolution in science and art.
