Answer of Cambridge Book 6 Test 3 Academic Writing Task 2ย ย
A few people think that foreign tourists should adhere to the local culture and traditions, while others think that different cultures should be welcomed by the host countries. Although visitors should respect other countriesโ local customs to avoid conflicts, I believe tolerating visitorsโ cultural differences is better because it benefits the host countriesโ economies.
On the one hand, some argue that visitors from other countries should act in accordance with local customs and behaviour to avoid arguments. When foreign visitors follow local traditions, locals feel respected, and it can help to prevent misunderstandings or quarrels that may arise from cultural differences, as some things might be offensive to the locals, which may be common for tourists. For example, in Arab countries, visitors cannot wear shorts or drink in public, as natives consider it against their religion and doing this can end up in disputes. However, I believe it is unrealistic to expect everyone to be comfortable following any countryโs culture, and teaching locals to embrace differences is far more beneficial.
On the other hand, others think that host countries need to embrace multiculturalism because it helps to boost their economies. This means that if locals respect visitorsโ cultures, no matter how different they are from theirs, tourists would feel more comfortable and positive about such host countries. This positive mindset can bring more tourism and money. In Thailand, for instance, foreigners can wear whatever they want without fear of judgment, which is why people go there in more numbers, boosting the countryโs economy. Since more money means people can lead a better lifestyle, this essay argues that this viewpoint is preferable.
In conclusion, even though respecting the local customs and behaviour would help visitors from different countries to stay away from arguments, I believe that welcoming visitors of different countries and traditions without putting any restrictions on them can improve the financial condition of the host countries.
