Answer of Cambridge Book 6 Test 2 Academic Writing Task 2

Successful athletes often earn significantly more money than individuals working in essential jobs. Some say that this is justifiable, while others say it is not. Although successful sports players bring fame to their countries, I believe that it is unacceptable because other professionals make a more significant contribution to society.

On the one hand, some argue that famous sportspeople earn more money because they bring honour to their nations. When a sports player wins an international competition, they are recognized by their country’s name, bringing glory to their nation. Since winning at the top level requires much hard work, these sports players should get well-compensated in return. For example, Olympic gold medalists are often paid millions of dollars because when they receive their medals on a podium, their nation’s flag is raised, and their national anthem is played, putting their country on the map. However, I would argue that such glories are short-lived because international events are organized almost annually.

On the other hand, others are of the view that there are jobs which are more valuable to society. They argue that sports are not essential for our survival, but many professions, such as doctors and police officers, are critical for maintaining the well-being of citizens and the normal functioning of society. On that basis, these professionals should be paid more than any big-name sports professionals. For instance, in the UK, millions of appointments are booked with GPs each year, and without their medical assistance, patients would not survive. Since societies would crumble if people stopped opting for such valuable professions due to less money, this essay believes that it is unreasonable to pay them less than entertainers.

In conclusion, even though some say prominent athletes should be paid well because they are assets to their countries, I consider it unjust to pay them so much because the contributions of other professionals are more valuable to the community.
