Answer of Cambridge Book 16 Test 4 Academic Writing Task 2

In the future, all vehicles, including cars, buses, and trucks, will be autonomous, with only passengers inside. While the downside of this technology is potential job loss, I believe the benefits, such as increased road safety, outweigh the drawbacks.

On the one hand, the primary drawback of driverless vehicles is the potential for widespread joblessness. As these vehicles eliminate the need for human drivers, these workers will become redundant for employers, and this could lead to unemployment, making it difficult for affected individuals to meet their basic needs. For example, as technology has replaced supermarket check-out clerks, it will likely do the same and take over the transport sector. However, this essay argues that drivers can retrain for new careers, and prioritizing road safety is crucial.

On the other hand, the main positive of this trend is the significant improvement in road safety due to driverless technology. This technology is extremely precise, with no room for error, so it accurately calculates the distance between vehicles to prevent collisions, making roads safer and more appealing. Most road accidents, for instance, occur because drivers get distracted and fail to stop in time, an issue that AI drivers would eliminate. Since saving human lives is paramount, I believe the benefits of deploying autonomous cars outweigh the downsides.

In conclusion, although the transition to driverless vehicles will lead to job losses, the enhanced safety provided by AI drivers is more crucial. Therefore, I believe the cons of this development are far outnumbered by the pros.
