Answer of Cambridge Book 15 Test 3 Academic Writing Task 2
Some argue that advertisements effectively convince people to buy products and services, while others suggest that people often ignore ads because they are everywhere. Although adverts can be effective since people usually need to see a product before buying it, I think advertising often fails to capture attention because people recognize marketing tactics and deliberately avoid being influenced.
On the one hand, some people think advertising is very persuasive because individuals typically do not purchase anything unless they see it advertised. When individuals learn about the existence of products via advertising, they may discover their desire or need for such products and then buy them. Hence, business owners rely on ads to sell their products and generate profits. For example, local farmers’ markets in small Indian towns boost sales by enticing customers from nearby cities with vibrant photos of fresh produce and homemade goods on social media platforms like Instagram. However, I believe that many people avoid looking at advertisements because they know about the gimmicks used by companies to tempt them.
On the other hand, others say that most people simply ignore adverts because they understand how marketing works and do not want to be manipulated. If someone has been disappointed by a purchase that did not live up to their expectations and promises made by companies, they are less likely to trust advertisements in the future. Consequently, it does not matter how appealing an ad is, people often do not take it seriously. For instance, many people purchase exercise equipment or hair oil that promises fast, easy results, but when they fail to lose weight or stop hair loss, they become disenchanted with all home workout equipment and hair oil advertising. Since people become cautious and aware others after falling for false promises, I believe these ads do not have a significant impact anymore.
In conclusion, even though some consider advertisements to be successful at influencing people to purchase things by making them aware of their existence, I believe that due to their omnipresence, people do not take notice of those advertisements because they know companies’ malpractices.
