Question: In a number of countries, some people think it is necessary to spend large sums of money on constructing new railway lines for very fast trains between cities. Others believe the money should be spent on improving existing public transport. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your experience. You should write at least 250 words.
Answer of Cambridge Book 12 Test 3 Academic Writing Task 2
In many nations, a few individuals argue that large amounts of money should be spent on constructing new railway tracks for high-speed trains between cities, while others are of the view that money should be invested in making the present public transport systems better. Although investing in high-speed rail is essential for economic growth, I believe that enhancing current public transport would be more beneficial because it would be eco-friendly.
On the one hand, some people believe constructing new railway lines for super-fast trains is necessary to boost economic growth. They argue that these high-speed trains can significantly reduce travel time between cities, making it easier for people to go to metro cities for jobs or do business in any part of the country. This would result in higher salaries and more profits, and the revenue generated for the governments will be higher. For instance, the Chinese economy has grown substantially since the introduction of bullet trains. However, I disagree with this view because the construction of new railway lines is extremely expensive and time-consuming, and it may not address the immediate needs of the majority of the population who rely on daily public transport.
On the other hand, others consider that the money should be allocated to improving existing public transport systems because this method is environmentally sustainable. This is because to enhance or extend the various modes of transport, including buses, trams, and subways, which serve both urban and rural areas, governments do not need to disrupt the ecological balance as much as they would have to if they were to lay down new railway lines. For example, increasing the arrival and departure frequency and expanding bus routes can make accessing urban centres easier for rural communities. Since saving our forests and mountains is paramount, I believe this view is stronger.
In conclusion, even though some advocate constructing new high-speed railway lines to enhance the economy, I believe that improving existing public transport systems should be the priority as it can ensure the safety of our environment.
