Answer of Cambridge Book 11 Test 4 Academic Writing Task 2

The primary goal for several governments is economic growth, whereas some argue that developments in other areas are of equal importance. Although states believe economic growth creates many jobs, I believe that improving public health should also be prioritized to keep people healthy.

On the one hand, many governments view economic growth as a major objective because it creates employment opportunities. This is because economic progress generates substantial wealth, allowing authorities to invest in various industries, such as manufacturing and agriculture, which rely heavily on manual labour, thereby increasing job demand. For example, the Japanese government changed its focus on the economy and invested heavily in the manufacturing sector, leading to significant financial growth as well as job opportunities. However, I would argue that these job opportunities are meaningless if people are not healthy, highlighting that improvement in the health sector is equally important.

On the other hand, others think that improving public healthcare services is just as crucial as economic growth because it helps maintain people’s physical and mental well-being. A robust healthcare system hinders the spread of preventable diseases and prolongs lives by providing better medical facilities and medicines, which means that people can productively carry out their day-to-day tasks in the workplace. Germany, for instance, has one of the lowest morbidity and mortality rates due to its efficient state-funded healthcare, which has allowed its citizens to lead overall healthy lives. Since a healthy nation contributes positively to the growth of a country, I believe public health should be equally important.

In conclusion, while numerous federal authorities consider economic progress their primary aim because it generates more jobs, I would argue that public healthcare systems should also be a priority for people’s good health.
