Answer to IELTS Cambridge Book 15 Test 1 General Writing Task 2
These days, the crime genre has become increasingly popular among readers and viewers of TV series in many countries. This essay believes that this popularity is due to the entertainment value of such content; however, I argue that it can lead to increased violence in society.
The growing fascination with crime novels and TV series can be attributed to their captivating nature. The plot of these stories is filled with suspense and unexpected twists, which pique the audience’s curiosity and keep them on the edge of their seat until the end of the story. This acts as an escape route from reality and helps people de-stress, so they get addicted to binge-watching or reading such content whenever they get some free time. For example, crime dramas such as CID and Crime Patrol on Indian TV channels consistently attract the highest viewership, particularly among younger and female audiences, who find them quite thrilling.
Despite their entertainment value, I believe that this type of theme can contribute to an increase in violence within society. Teenagers, who are significant consumers of crime novels and TV shows, are particularly susceptible to being influenced due to their lack of maturity. Unsupervised exposure to such content can inspire teens to emulate the criminal behaviours they observe, potentially leading to an increased sense of brutality and a lack of empathy in them. For instance, there have been many robberies and cybercrimes where the offenders are said to be inspired by famous crime shows like Money Heist and Breaking Bad.
In conclusion, while the increasing popularity of crime books and TV series is undeniably due to their intriguing nature, I consider their popularity to be somewhat concerning because they may promote cruelty in society.
