Answer of Cambridge Book 19 Test 1 Academic Writing Task 2

A few individuals say that competition is beneficial, be it at work, at school, or in daily life, while others think cooperation should be prioritized over competition. Although competition can drive individuals to exceed their limits, I believe collaborating with others is more advantageous as it can ease the workload.

On the one hand, some advocate for competition at every stage of life because it encourages people to strive for excellence. They believe that being competitive creates a drive to get ahead of others and achieve success, and in order to do so, people will need to work on their weaknesses and hone their skills, which will ultimately benefit them in the long run. For example, most successful people have mentioned in interviews that their ambition to be the best in their fields has contributed to their achievements. However, I think working alone can only take a person so far, and always being competitive can take a toll on one’s physical and mental health as well.

On the other hand, others consider that people should work together more often because it can alleviate the burden on a single person. That is to say that if a person works alone, they will have to manage every aspect of that work, which can be tiresome. In contrast, working in a team allows for distributing responsibilities and combining strengths to achieve optimal results. As a result, team members can enjoy more free time to spend with family or pursue personal interests, helping them to relax and unwind. An entrepreneur working solo, for instance, must manage sales, purchases, and accounting, whereas in a team, these tasks can be delegated. Since collaboration enables people to learn from each other and reach new heights, this essay believes that teamwork is more important.

In conclusion, even though some say having to compete is advantageous because it drives self-improvement, I consider we should try to be more cooperative instead because it can make our lives easier.
