Answer of Cambridge Book 3 Test 1 Academic Writing Task 2 –

It is argued that international sporting events such as the football World Cup or the Olympics play an important part in reducing tensions between two or more nations and providing a safe platform to express patriotism. I completely agree with this statement because they provide a stage to enhance understanding between nations and constructively support one’s national team.

The main reason I believe such sporting occasions can lessen international tension is that they give countries a chance to have an open dialogue. This is because during opening ceremonies of such significant events, high-profile people and politicians of other countries are hosted by the host nation, and this allows such influential people to clear the air and find common ground so that they can collaborate for the betterment of their citizens. For example, during the cricket World Cup in India, they hosted the diplomats of their arch-rival, Pakistan, which helped to remove some misunderstandings, and they lifted restrictions on trade, benefiting people of both nations.

Another reason to consider is that fans can safely outlet their patriotic emotions by supporting their team. When they are in the stadium cheering for their teams, they can show their love towards their country by waving flags and wearing national colours and team jerseys to boost the confidence of their players. Doing this will help them channel their energy positively, reducing the likelihood of displaying aggressive nationalism. During international football matches, for instance, fans usually rally behind their teams by singing their national anthems and painting national flags on their bodies, creating a festive atmosphere that helps to bridge their social and political differences.

In conclusion, I totally agree that international sporting events can help ease tensions and safely release patriotic sentiments because such events can give politicians a platform to discuss issues, and fans can positively display their emotions.
